Voices

Between 2003 and 2006, Hazel Weedon and Jan Rennie interviewed four long standing Hempstead residents (Elsie Bacon, Margaret Drane, Dorothy Fleming and Nellie Halls) about life in the village between the wars. The recordings were deposited with the Essex Records Office (ERO) in Chelmsford. The links below are provided by courtesy of the Essex Sound and Video Archive of ERO, whose co-operation and encouragement in this part of the project has been invaluable.

More recently, in 2024, Diana Frost and Ross Midgley have interviewed some of Hempstead’s longer standing residents. Transcripts and/or recordings of these conversations are given below.
