On 11-12 November 1972, Hempstead held a festival weekend, culminating in a ‘sing through’ performance of Handel’s Messiah in St Andrew’s Church, conducted by Raymond Slee and including a choir of 40 primary school children. The journal of that weekend was entered in a county-wide competition for village community projects, which they won in the face of tough competition from much larger towns and villages.
