Anne and Rod Luscombe moved to Hempstead in 1973. Anne remembers that there were the ruins of two thatched cottages at the front that had burned down before they arrived. An old bakehouse, together with its WC, was in the back garden and the Luscombes did a swap with the neighbours which game them this building in exchange for a parcel of land. The building gave Anne and Rod an additional room (now incorporated into the extension) while the land gave the neighbours access to what is now Two Ways. There was also an old cow byre at the back.
