The house dates from about 1700 and was originally three cottages. Two were converted prior to 1980; the third was acquired and incorporated in 1989. A further adjacent plot was bought in 1989, bringing the whole property back into single ownership. Timber framed with a tiled roof (Source: T Vale, Hempstead Millennium Domesday Project).
The house was not damaged in the Christmas Day fire of 1957 which destroyed the adjacent four cottages. Brian Gypps, who lived in one of them, describes the events in a recorded interview in the Voices section. The four houses destroyed were at 90 degrees to the road. Four Winds and Wellyards now stand on the site.
