William Barnacle was inevitably nicknamed ‘Barnacle Bill’: Robbie Nairn thinks that he was actually a sailor. Margaret Nairn remembers doing flowers with Joyce Fordham at Radwinter one year, when there was due to be a village wedding during Lent. Rev. Barnacle would not allow any flowers for the wedding, insisting that everything should be plain. But, Margaret says he got married himself the following year, also during Lent, but this time had “all the bells and whistles and all the colours”. Margaret was not impressed. She doesn’t believe that he was very popular. He also had a reputation for being quite intolerant of children at his services.
